For her solo exhibition FOLDS OF MATTER at KVIT Gallery Copenhagen 2018, Emilie Carlsen worked with complex allegorical patterns and examined the meeting between analogue and digital realms. Through different textile experiments she explored the human texturality in a world of data and digitalization. Carlsen is fascinated by the folds of our inner life – the secret biological life of hidden data, outside of our consciousness, but still a part of us. Through the mix of microscopic imagery and large soft textiles, she examines the human and non-human shapes and characteristics of the inner and outer folds, in the obscure state of matter where the fold occurs reduced and enlarged at once. In this play with surfaces and volume, the exhibition challenges the viewers core idea of reality and bodily materiality.
